If you’re opening a pharmacy in Europe — or sourcing pharmacy signs for a chain — understanding local signage regulations is essential. Requirements vary significantly by country. This guide covers the key rules for the main European markets.
Turkey (TEB Standard)
The Turkish Pharmacists Association (TEB) mandates red-background, white-lettered “ECZANE” signs in vacuum-formed acrylic. LED green crosses are permitted. Specific fonts, proportions and mounting heights are defined. All pharmacy signs must comply before municipal approval is granted.
Germany
German pharmacy (“Apotheke”) signs are regulated at Länder level. Most states require the red “A” logo (Deutsches Apothekenzeichen) and the word “Apotheke” clearly displayed. LED illumination is widely accepted. Window graphics showing operating hours are mandatory.
United Kingdom
UK pharmacies are regulated by the GPhC. External signage must clearly identify the premises as a pharmacy. The green cross symbol is commonly used but not legally mandated — it is however the universally recognised symbol. Planning permission may be required for externally illuminated signs.
France
French pharmacies (“Pharmacie”) are required to display a lit green cross — this is one of the few countries where it is legally compulsory. The cross must be animated (rotating or flashing) when the pharmacy is open. Sign luminosity and dimensions are regulated.
Netherlands
Dutch pharmacy (“Apotheek”) signage requirements are governed by local municipalities. The green cross is the standard identifier. Illuminated signs require building permit applications in most municipalities.
